Tuflex Geocell

INTRODUCTION

The Tuflex Geocell Mattress has been designed to increase the stability of embankments constructed over soft soils. As it is erected and progressively filled in-situ with a granular material, it forms a rigid platform. This can mobilise a higher bearing capacity from the soft sub-soil while also minimising differential settlement and lateral spread.

Often, the alternative to installing a Tuflex Geocell Mattress is to excavate the weak soil and replace it with an imported material. This is economically feasible for only very shallow depths and, even so, it can be a problem when working close to existing structures or below the water table. This construction method also generates a high volume of off site traffic.

The Geocell provides a number of charecteristics to ensure that plastic flow is the critical failure mechanism:

Rigidity
High tensile strength
High friction at its lower face

The "Tuflex" Geocell Mattress is constructed directly on the embankment formation to form a continuous, open, cellular structure. As filling progresses the Contractor uses the filled mattress as a construction platform avoiding the normal problems and delays associated with soft ground conditions.
Readymade mattresses are also provided in cases where necessary.
